  • Charles Buckley
Biography : Charles Buckley received an MFA at Hunter College in New York and a BFA in painting at the California College Of Arts in Oakland, California. Detailed Description : For Charles Buckley, painting as a practice is a means of engaging with the world and investigating preconceived notions. His progression paintings, rendered on multiple canvases, are an investigation of the construction of narrative and progress. Buckley’s work often deals with “leakage,” which he describes as “the area where things cannot be explained rationally, yet fit within the logic of the painting and seem to be known.”

Detailed Description : ARTIST STATEMENT At a very young age I started studying and drawing maps. The first maps I ever saw may have been the highway maps stashed in our Ford Country Squire station wagon’s glove box. By my teens I had a map and atlas collection totaling well over a thousand and spent my free time engorged in cartography. My fascination of maps led me to study cartography at UC Santa Barbara and followed with creating maps for faculty at UCLA. Imagine the effect of spending much of a lifetime intimately tracing coasts, rivers, highways and more. Inevitably the visual rhythms of geography largely created my visual sensibility, that is, my sense of what works or does not work visually. I would dare say it has even seeped into my DNA. The interplay of a lifetime of maps and my fine art painting became most apparent in the late 1980’s when I started to create map paintings. Their purpose was not to explain the geography of a place but rather to use the essence geographic forms to re-express them in an entirely new way. Today my paintings still echo their geographic foundation. Whether is it translating the essence of the sand patterns made by the waves on Baker Beach or the dusty Kalahari as seen from a plane. My latest series, Morphic, adds in the influence of landscape views such as the view from my ridge top studio off Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles. This new series represents a significant shift from the two-dimensional map view to an abstract composition that implies a three dimensional space. Also represented by: Susan Eley Fine Art,

  • Tracy Barbosa Silva
Biography : Tracy Silva Barbosa was born in 1977 in Taunton, MA to immigrant factory workers from the Azorean Islands of Portugal. Tracy displayed an early passion for the arts and an inclination toward abstract thought. Tracy attended The Massachusetts College of Art, where she entered the sculpture department and majored in glass. This course of study, which allowed access to many different facilities, provided the foundation for a process-oriented approach in her work. Early influences included Gustav Klimt, Donald Judd, and Gerhard Richter as well as more classical paradigms found in the Byzantine, Baroque, and Rococo periods. As a student traveling to Japan, the young artist was taken by the aesthetic of asymmetry and the narrative quality found in Asian scroll paintings. Upon graduation Barbosa relocated to the San Francisco Bay area to work for John Lewis Glass. Over the next three years she worked closely with Lewis on a variety of projects including the Oklahoma City Memorial. After moving on to New York City, Tracy began to focus more on painting as a formal study method for her glass sculpture. Through this medium she discovered a new freedom, reflected in the prolific outturn of her paintings and sculptures for an increasingly enthusiastic contingent of collectors. Tracy now lives and works in Taunton, MA. A painter and a sculptor, Carole Eisner has worked with scrap and recycled metal for 40 years, creating elegant, abstract forms welded in steel. The artist's compositions reflect the surprising malleability she finds with metal. She works with “the debris of our civilization,” reclaiming and reassembling disregarded fragments of buildings and bridges into art. Eisner's longevity as an artist is a testament to the natural marriage between her monumental outdoor sculptures and the climate of public spaces. Born and raised in the Bronx, Eisner received a BFA from Syracuse University. A life-long New Yorker, the artist splits her time between New York City and Weston, Connecticut.

A painter and a sculptor, Eisner has worked with scrap and recycled metal for 40 years, creating elegant, abstract forms welded in steel. The artist’s twisted and curved sculptures reflect the surprising malleability she finds with metal. Eisner’s larger-than-life works and small scale sculptures are ideal for public exhibition, and, indeed, have been exhibited in dozens of public parks, corporate plazas, cultural centers, museums and waterfronts all along the northeast corridor in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Florida, as well as in Belgium and France. Eisner’s longevity as an artist—she has had over 20 solo shows and 20 group shows—is a testament to the mass appeal of her work and the natural marriage between her sculptures and the climate of public spaces. Eisner is represented in private, public and corporate collections, including the Guggenheim, and has been written up in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Who’s Who in American Art, Vogue and New York Newsday.

Carlos Puyol lives in Barcelona, Spain. He is known for his vibrant paintings showing vertical bands of flat, shining color, adjacent to and sometimes overlapping with patches of messy, tangled drips of multi-colored paint. In these enigmatic paintings Puyol shows Pop Art rubbing shoulders with its art historical predecessor Abstract Expressionism. “I always believed that abstract painting was a way of avoiding reality, but curiously, in the current context, my paintings are an affirmation of ‘the real’; a resistance against becoming mere signs in a system of an endless exchange of abstract concepts,” says Puyol
  • Alex Wood
Biography : Alex Wood was Born in Essex in 1966, and spent his early childhood in Canada before returning to the United Kingdom and settling in a quiet Manchester suburb. During six years of Art School, studying Graphic Design and Photography, Wood became part of the Manchester underground music scene throughout the 1980s and 1990s. After a year divided between Paris and Milan, Wood returned to Manchester and began creating Street Art, choosing stencils for the immediate result they gave. This led to a commission for Factory Records Headquarters in Manchester and his work featured in the Oasis video 'Shakermaker'. Settling in Amsterdam in 2002, Wood began re-exploring images, texts and composition with a series of graphic canvases. Now living and working in Sweden since 2004, Wood's work has moved away from its purely flat graphic origin towards a more multi-layered abstraction. Wood has a BA Graphic Design, Manchester Polytechnic, 1988. Susan Eley
Alie Smith   Manager of online functions
Alsu Sabirova   Gallery Assistant
Susan Eley Fine Art was founded in the spring of 2006 by Eley as a salon-style gallery. Situated in an Upper West Side townhouse in NYC, the Gallery offers an intimate, personal viewing experience, contrary to the more formal presentations of art in typical white box galleries. Eley opened the Gallery to provide gallerygoers with a fresh, alternative way to enjoy art.

The Gallery focuses on contemporary art by emerging and mid-career artists, who work in a range of media, from paint to photography to sculpture and print. Solo and group exhibitions showcase abstract as well as figurative work from a diverse body of artists from the U.S., Asia, Latin America and Europe. Gallery artists are dynamic, active professionals, who produce strong bodies of work that constantly shift and evolve.
